What are some ways to unify a high school in terms of computer networking?

I work in a high school (8-12th graders) and was wondering, in general, what are some ways to unify all computer users in the administration side and make the job functions easier for teachers, and staff members such as the principal.

I have a few ideas, e.g. installing a network drive to be accessed throughout all computers to share files amongst each other and have a server up and running for the lab workstations but I still have ways to go with the staff workstations where they are still unrestricted in many aspects and are not connected to a domain. I am wondering if it would be best to log everyone on a domain and work from there. The only reason why I am reluctant is the user’s reluctance to relinquish user privileges.

All in all, I just like to hear some ideas and opinions.
P.S. most computers operate mainly on XP, some 2000 but I am trying to phase out old OS’s. Server is running on 2003 Server Edition.

A program that I use is called Desktop Authority from Scriptlogic for me it just makes mapping drives/printers etc really easy you can even setup the printer mapping to follow where they are located at so you can make their default printer for one office different than the other. If you are going to setup the network drives etc I would definetely use quotas on them so you don’t get someone hogging up all the space. Its my firm belief that the majority of the users out there don’t need admin rights on their workstations so that’s the first thing I’d take away from them. Get everything connected to the domain so that way it’s easier for you to manage, you may want to segregate out the student pcs from the teachers some how. Being that your on xp and 2000 it will make your job alot easier.
